Knit With Purpose is a knitwear initiative launched in 2023 by the Victoria Native Friendship Centre in British Columbia, Canada. Its mission is to preserve the Cowichan sweater tradition of the Coast Salish people while ensuring fair pay and recognition for Indigenous artisans.
Each garment is hand-knit from locally sourced wool using traditional Cowichan methods—thick single-ply spinning, natural undyed shades, and cultural motifs. Unlike mass-produced “Cowichan-style” reproductions, these sweaters are authentic, signed by their makers, and accompanied by proof of origin.
By purchasing from Knit With Purpose, customers directly support Coast Salish culture, sustain Indigenous communities, and help protect a craft passed down for generations.
